100 Days to Go
With just 100 days to go to the Soccer World cup in South Africa, the city of Cape Town is a buzz with activities. People are running around wit their soccer shirts on and waving flags. A company I visited today, Laser Logistics had a staff soccer match in the car park over lunchtime with lots of cheering and support from on lookers. At last we are beginning to see the buy in from the general public for this event.
We are looking forward to the count down to the 11 June kick off.

Find your local hotspot for 2010
An innovative website now up for South Africa world cup: 2010 Unlike, is one of the best we have seen detailing an unbiased list of events, shops accommodation and great coffee bars. Each major SA city is featured and allows the user to create their own selection of places in their ‘tour’ to be saved or sent to others.
A brilliant site that offers both ease of use and creativity as well as being portable on different platforms. We look forward to more brilliant ideas like these to boost the Entrepreneurial spirit in South Africa. Come on get those party hats off and put them thinking caps back on.
The Day Doubt Died
Today, Friday 4th December 2009, Soccer world cup draw day. This day we, Cape Town, South Africa and Africa will prove to the world and ourselves that we are indeed worthy of hosting this event.
Danny Jordaan said yesterday that today would be the day that doubt dies in the minds of those who oppose this event. It has been a long and bumpy road for the organizers and for all of us. We have had to endure road works, stadium construction, strikes and tons of negativity from those opposing the whole event. Yes they have a point but mostly is comes from a personal point of view of change and disruption.
Congrats to Danny, his team and all those who made this event possible. Good luck to the 32 teams, let’s hope you draw is favorable. Now let the ticket sales and venue bookings begin. Just 189 days to kick off. Can’t wait.
2010 Final Draw and Fifa regulations
This week in Cape Town marks the true beginning of the 2010 Soccer world cup with the final draw to see who plays who and where. On the 4th December during a 4 hour event at the CTICC we will finally know which teams will stay where. What has this got to do with Entrepreneurship? Two things;
Bookings will skyrocket for accommodation in the host cities and team villages, We have seen many overnight websites popping up all over the country trying to grab a slice of the pie for themselves. If you miss this boat you could find yourself out in the cold. Just a simple search on Google or Bing on accommodation 2010 reveals hundreds of small businesses offering all sorts of rooms, houses and flats fat massive prices. If you are looking to book, do not be fooled by photos of exotic beaches and the stadium, find out exactly where these places are before you book. You could just pay through the nose for some back street flat in a run down suburb.
Secondly we have begun to see the wrath of Fifa on our city. All events for this week that involved more than about 20 people have been cancelled off our calendar. Events like the Aids day march on international Aids day Tuesday 01 December has been disallowed because it may divert attention away from an event on Friday night. Streets have been blocked off to traffic for the whole week. The future fan park in the city has been fenced off. This is just a taste of what is to come. Be aware of the regulations and the possible impact on your business, transport, suppliers and customers. Be prepared and survive.
Do not get me wrong, I fully support this event but we need to get all the information so we know what the rules of engagement are. Go SA.
Gone Sailing – Clipper Fleet Leaves Cape Town
We took a trip out into Table Bay this afternoon to bid farewell to the clipper fleet as they departed from Cape Town on their way to Australia. This race with a difference allows opportunity for the everyday person (with a handful of money) to buy a place on one of the yachts for a leg on a race around the world that follows the old clipper trade wind routes. If you are keen to experience an adventure of a life time, bookings are open for the next 2010/2011 race.
The fleet set off in 30 knots of southeaster that soon faded to 3 knots in the shadow of the mountain. We just floated around taking in the sights of our wonderful city and views of the new Greenpoint stadium that is almost done. It looks great from the ocean side with the mountain as a backdrop.

World Cup Teams
The World Cup teams have been finalised for 2010. The draw to see who plays who will take place in Cape Town in just two weeks time. The heat is rising, the stadium is almost finished, we are ready.
Time to get those soccer colours out and celebrate football Fridays. Here are the 32 teams in order of world ranking: Brazil (1), Spain (2), Netherlands (3), Italy (4), Germany (5), Argentina (6), England (7), France (9), Portugal (10), United States (11), Switzerland (13), Cameroon (14), Greece (16), Chile (17), Mexico (18), Ivory Coast (19), Serbia (20), Paraguay (21), Australia (24), Uruguay (25), Denmark (27), Algeria (29), Nigeria (32), Slovakia (33), Honduras (35), Ghana (38), Japan (40), South Korea (48), Slovenia (49), New Zealand (83), South Africa (85), North Korea (91).
Can’t wait.
Green Point Stadium Lights – WOW!
I got this pic emailed to me taken from the control tower in the Cape Town harbour. These sorts of pics need to become the front cover for the show reel of Cape Town. We do indeed live in a city of great beauty. Thanks to the photographer, let us know who you are so we can give you credit.
Small Businesses and the 2010 World Cup
I have written a lot about this subject over the past few months and still I am bombarded with business owners who have not yet understood what impact a sporting even such as a soccer world cup could have on their organisation.
So in response we are hosting a series of free webinars to inform, educate and enthuse all business owners in South Africa to get the facts, be prepared and take action.
We are not just looking at hospitality and selling souvenirs but across all industries and sectors. Join us on Friday 30th October 11:00 – 12:00 for a free webinar to begin to understand these facts and potential negative impact on your business.
