SA Navy Open Day

This event is always an interesting time in Cape Town. The ‘Pride of SA’ opens their doors to let tens of thousands of people into the normally well-secured premises in Simons Town.

This year the German navy were in town for war games and have been kind enough to open some of their vessels for tours. I took Friday afternoon off and took my son to do the boy’s thing and got to play with the big guns and see all the creative ways technology has evolved to kill more people with less effort.

They put on a mock battle for us with lots of noise, smoke and helicopters. The Navy task force over came the pirates and took them away in cuff with a loud applause from the spectators, giving us all a sense of safety and warm and fuzzy just before the World Cup.

A day well spent, good to see what my tax money goes to and that we do actually have ships, subs and crafts with competent people to man them.

Bugs in the system

Image206This past weekend was full to the brim with activity: Workshop training on Sat morning, SA cricket (well done team), Rugby (almost but not quite for the Stormers), the Design Indaba, Fishing, family time and revamping the tree house for my son. I did notice that we were getting a huge influx of bugs in our area. This one was trying to get into my office but my anti Virus glass sliding door was able to shut it out. Just as well, it looked ferocious and potentially lethal.

Here is an extract from Dawid Mocke’s newletter to his Surf Ski School this week, thought it was worth sharing.
Here’s a thought…”the sweet smell of success is really only the stench of sweat.”  We so often see success in whatever fashion and long to be in such a place, however we seldom recognise the hard work it has taken anyone who has been succesfull.
One of the life lessons Nikki and I learnt on the journey to the Olympics was that “when you get there, it’s tough!”  It’s a fact that the road to success is not a highway, but rather a singletrack.  The best thing we can do is to recognise the hard and tough times for exactly what they are: symptoms of success, characteristically there if you want to “make it”.
Our country is at a serious cross roads right now.  The worst thing that you and I could do is to justify mediocrity and to justify any manner of cutting corners.  Right now, more than any time before, we need to be straight down the line honest, hard working and upfront.  Just think of the example that you can set; of the people that you can motivate to follow your lead.  Let’s not sit back and watch things go backwards, complaining as it happens.  Get active, and start with yourself.  If you see rubbish, pick it up; don’t speed; say “Please” and “Thank you”; regard everyone: the doorman, the waiter, the car guard, and don’t forget to tip them; show up on time; do what you say and finish what you start.  C’mon man, you live here as much as anyone else, don’t wait for someone else to lead us, YOU lead the way.  We have seen that it’s possible for one person to change the world.  Only one person’s actions and choices can direct history’s course.  YOU could be that person.

This video from MNET’s All Access was broadcast last week showing all the hot spots of our new Cape Town Stadium. See the rooms that most of us will never get to enjoy and the shots from the air are truly spectacular. It is indeed good to live in one of the most beautiful cities in the world, now with one of the best stadiums. Welcome to Cape Town. Looking forward to all of you who will join us for the Soccer World Cup.

I found this 4 minute video on Cherryflava.com and it needs to be shared, so here it is. Enjoy, Think, Act.

The E-Wave has begun

With the world cup less than a year away we have begun to see the wave of entrepreneurship spreading over the southern tip of Africa.

A host of small businesses are gearing up for the influx of visitors to our shores with the hopes of making some money from the event. This is not the only factor contributing to this wave; we have also seen a huge amount of people returning home to South Africa from contracts having been cancelled or completed in Dubai, Africa and Europe. This has brought home many skilled people who find themselves often un-employable in the current South African market and have turned to starting small businesses to offer their services to the market as consultants or contractors.

As this entrepreneur wave builds over the next few months we will begin to see more opportunity for small business to stake their claim in the economic market as well as providing a huge benefit to larger companies who gain access to skilled services without the burden of employment and labour issues. Small business owners also have the luxury of working their own hours and selling their services to multiple clients to diversify their day and skills.

So grab your Entrepreneurial Surf board abd paddle out to the wave, let’s all hang ten together.

If I could sum up a typical South African Male culture, this video says it all.

It had us all laughing but also recognising ourselves. Enjoy.

Vote for Table Mountain

Just incase you have been living under a stone for the past few months, here is an update on the 7 Wonders of the World voting procedure. The first stage closed in December 2008 with 261 identified sites going through to the next round. We have until June to vote Table Mountain in to be selected as one of the top 77 sites and through to the next round of voting. I see on the list that our prestige mountain is only 24th on the list of mountains and way way down on the list of all categories. So please get to www.new7wonders.com and cast your vote and get your certificate.

7-wonders

I am ashamed at how many places on the list I have not even heard of. This may be a good time to start planning some travel time with the family. Go vote now

Today I met up with Helena Mentz who has recently returned home from time abroad to earn some pounds and gain experience in the international arena of recruitment. Helena contacted me through LinkedIn and we started chatting about world domination and job creation (stuff entrepreneurs do all the time). Our meeting today was to discuss her new idea of setting up a focus business to welcome the many South Africans back home and helping them with job interviews and placements together with all the related issues of relocation and settling back home. We at the Entrepreneur Incubator are always pleased to chat to people passionate about South Africa and our people. Our focus on helping Entrepreneurs create businesses and employment is core to the Incubator programme. I look forward to chatting more to Helena in the future as she develops this business that is certain to gain huge popularity in the next few months as people come back to the best country in the world. Our job is to now go to the polls tomorrow and have our say and then believe in the elected leaders to build our nation into the future.
