I have been devastated in the past by the
success of others with whom I have been associated with. When they then became
successful, it created all sorts of ugly emotions deep within me. I know I am
not alone, why, because there is even a book written on this very topic.
The success of others, being family,
friends, spouse or arch enemy all bring out that green eyed monster that lurks
just beneath the surface in all of us. Coping with this takes a lot of courage
and positive self esteem. Just look at the faces of those who were nominated in
award ceremonies but fail to win. That flat smile and wide eyes and short sharp
applause. When deep inside them the thoughts of rage and revenge and anguish
swirl around with images of blunt force trauma.
Turning the success of others into a
positive experience needs to happen way before they get successful. Your
support and encouragement as a team needs to be one of cooperation and collaboration.
Then when the win comes through we can all celebrate together. Just remember to
remind them to mention you in their speech so you get that all important
affirmation and personal ego stroke.
