National Pride
This week we celebrate Human Rights day in South Africa. A
day when we get to look back at the checked past of our country and celebrate
our constitution and the access to human rights as citizens of a free democracy.
Or is it? Jobs and secure employment is still only available
to the elite and well connected. Being employed in a stable job is a privilege
not a right, as is access to clean water, toilets and housing. The majority of
the people in SA are no better off almost 2 decades after t... Continue reading ...

CherryFlava - Trend Prediction 2012

National Pride
We follow Jon Cherry on his blog Cherryflava to keep up with the inside to marketing and trends. Yesterday on Cape Talk Jon was asked to predict a trend for 2012. His reply got me all excited about next year, read what he said, take from his blog: We made a trend prediction for 2012 on Cape Talk this morning, which is more of a ‘holding thumbs’ prediction than one based on any kind of analysis. The hope is – that as South African consumers, we become less seduced by big brands and their ... Continue reading ...

National Pride
Yesterday, Sunday 13th, Cape
Town once again hosted the Big Walk. This has to be one of the biggest sporting
events we get to see each year. Over 35 000 people get up early and
equipped with walking shoes of various shapes and colours to challenge
themselves to walk one of ten routes ranging from 5 km to 80 km. The organizing
committee from Rotary and Spartan Harriers get up a lot earlier to marshal,
pour drinks, massage and manage the participants and the event. So much energy goes
into maki... Continue reading ...

Raising money with a hairy upper lip

National Pride
Today sees the start of Movember, a now worldwide event allowing men
to be boys and play with our bodies in a way that does not offend anyone. Unless
you get too close.
For the duration of the month we get to prove
our ability to grow facial hair and stop shaving our top lips, cultivating what
could be recognized as a moustache of sorts. Just a bit of fun but a chance to
raise funds and awareness for men’s health and prostate cancer.
If you are a man, or able to grow hair on
your upper li... Continue reading ...

Africa Day – a time to reflect and plan, not celebrate
We have seen our Africa continent go from
mildly well to sickly and poor over the last 20 years. Noted we have also seen
South Africa relieved of Apartheid and the rise of Nelson Mandela but civil
war, dictatorship governments, ethnic cleansing, drugs, rape, HIV, AIDS, Malaria
and corruption has taken many African countries from being afloat to circling
the drain. One of the biggest issues around not fixing the problem, apart from
our huge lack of authentic leadership is the use of ‘free gr... Continue reading ...
My South Africa by Jonathan Jansen
This is doing the rounds on various blogs and emails and it got me thinking about our country and those we share it with. We are so often swamped with bad news and negativity, so this comes as a refreshing shower. Thanks Jonathan My South Africa
is the working-class man who called from the airport to return my wallet
without a cent missing. It is the white woman who put all three of her domestic
worker's children through the same school that her own child attended. It is
the politician in one ... Continue reading ...
Do Not Call Me Again, Ever
One of the off spins of the CPA (Consumer
Protection Act) is the implementation and control of a Do Not Call Me database.
This database lists all the people, phone numbers and email addresses who have
opted out of direct marketing services.
Having your details on this list will mean
that you should never receive calls from those pesky insurance, security and
cell phone call centers again. Sound like the best thing since ice-cream? It
does come with a warning: You may just miss out on that o... Continue reading ...

Taking Down the Towers
The whole of Cape Town took to the streets
on Sunday to witness the 30 seconds of destruction of the cooling towers in
Athlone. Watching something destructive like this has the same attraction as medieval
executions, a real crowd drawer. They estimated that more people watched the
towers than the World Cup Final. Funny how people are?
It did remind me that we all have a set of
towers in our own lives that we have built and treasured for years but offer no
value to either ourselves or others.... Continue reading ...

country as we welcome visitors from around the world.
We had millions of people out in the

all people to take to the streets to blow their vuvuzelas to welcome the world
to the start of the tournament. This Facebook event started just 7 days ago

Celebration of Nature, Cape Town
On my way to a function yesterday evening in Cape Town, I drove up over the side of Table Mountain to be met with one of the most impressive Sunsets I have seen for ages. I was unable to stop and take a pic and wished that I knew someone with a camera who could capture the beauty show that nature was putting on for us. Then this morning I was pleased to find out that one our own EI Members, Frenske Otzen, who is a professional photographer was on Blouberg Beach and clicking away capturing the...
